The 2014 Element 28 Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautiful bouquet of
blueberries and cassis. Flavors of boysenberry, violet, vanilla, and cedar,
combined with hillside intensity, make a delectable presentation, while the rich
tannins enhance the midpalate. This is a big wine with so much fruit and depth
of flavor. If you love powerful wines, this is one that you can enjoy now or lay
down for many years in your cellar.
Element 28 is named after the owner of the vineyard, Erik Nickel, who
ingeniously came up with the name Element 28, which is “nickel” on the
periodic table. Located high in the hills across from Lake Henessey, this
vineyard has a nice western exposure, comprised of shallow, gravelly loam
soils which produce small vines with loose clusters and small berries. Three
different clones offer a variety of concentrated fruit flavors that are hallmarks
of this hillside vineyard.
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Element 28 emerges from the eastern hills of Napa overlooking
Lake Hennessey. The wine has a dense, opaque purple color, a beautiful blackberry and cassis nose with some underlying minerality, a touch of forest floor and crushed rock, and a medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic finish. Forget this wine for 3-4 years and drink it over the following 20 years. -Robert Parker
